Research

Background

The protection and sustainable use of water resources plays a decisive role for the future of humankind. That is why the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) funds the development of integrated planning tools for the sustainable use of water resources and the adaptation of water technologies to different climatic, ecological, economical and social conditions.

Many emerging and developing nations suffer from a shortage in the supply of drinking water and inadequate wastewater disposal. The development targets of the UN Millennium Summit 2000 and the World Summit on Sustainable Development 2002 include halving the number of people without access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation by 2015.

The Federal Government supports these urgent humanitarian efforts by means of IWRM research in numerous partner countries in Asia, the Middle East and Africa as part of the 'Research for Sustainability' framework programme of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

The development and expansion of sustainable water and wastewater infrastructures is also a growing investment market. For this reason, IWRM research is also included in the interdepartmental High-Tech Strategy and contributes to attaining the targets of the German Water Partnership.
