At the World Water Week in Stockholm (26-31 August 2011), a seminar on Integrated Water Resources Management took place. A lot of interested conference attendees participated at the seminar.
The seminar addressed integrated concepts for urban water and sanitation planning and their implementation in emerging and developing countries. Its objective was to share results from international (action) research initiatives and practical management approaches from (mega)-cities in Asia, Africa and from cities in the Middle East. The focus was on improving water buffer management of urban dwellers who are dependent on in-situ self-help supply like private wells and rainwater harvesting.
Urban water supply systems often do not reach the entire city. Water recharge, retention and re-use solutions provide hands-on means to secure safe water supply as well as mitigating flooding in urban environments. This includes not only the safe use of the natural water buffer that the shallow groundwater provides, but also the use of the storage in deeper aquifers, the potential for rainwater harvesting in a variety of ways and the opportunities to enhance water conservation in urban planning and storm water management.
The outputs of the seminar are:
1. a better understanding of practical implementation challenges by scientists and
2. an increased knowledge base for practitioners in the field of urban water resources management.
