    Portrait

The IWRM principle has the aim of contributing to the quantitatively and qualitatively sustainable management of interlinked surface waters, aquifers and coastal waters. This will help ensure the social and economic development and the efficiency of vitally important ecosystems. Under this funding priority, new approaches and technologies will be tested, adapted and developed in model regions of manageable size.

    Research

The funding priority currently includes 16 projects in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. One decisive issue is the potential contribution of adapted water/environmental technologies and the transfer of know-how towards the establishment of IWRM in each model region. All projects are based on an integrated approach, in which the interests of all stakeholders are taken into account. Natural, ecological and socio-economic conditions must also be taken into consideration. Depending on the region, different key problems are tackled and appropriate solutions developed.

    Accompanying projects

The Germany Ministry of Education and Research supports international ties of German universities, research institutes and enterprises with the ultimate goal of building competencies and fostering competitive advantages for industry and the research community in Germany in the areas of research and innovation. Two accompanying projects support networking activities and improve the prospects for the implementation of IWRM concepts. A third accompanying project provides instruments for governance analysis.
